Review by Izzy B.

In My Sister’s Keeper, Jodi Picoult delivers a powerful exploration of family dynamics and ethical dilemmas in the face of illness. The novel follows Ana, a girl conceived to be a genetic match for her sister Kate, who is battling leukemia. Although Ana is perfectly healthy, she finds her identity entangled in the role of caregiver as she endures numerous medical procedures to help her sister survive.

Picoult skillfully portrays the emotional turmoil within the family, with Ana’s father serving as a grounding force that aids her journey of self-discovery. Jesse, their brother, adds another layer to the narrative, representing the often-silenced sibling who struggles for attention and recognition amid the family’s crisis. Engaging and filled with unexpected twists, “My Sister’s Keeper” kept me on the edge of my seat, eagerly anticipating each new development. The vivid, realistic scenes made me feel as though I was experiencing their struggles firsthand. However, I felt that Jesse’s story could have been expanded upon for greater impact.

I recommend this book to those who enjoy medical/judicial law fiction, as well as those who appreciate drama. This book contains intense family drama, which may be a sensitive topic for some, but is handled in an emotional, receptive way. The book is an easy read (on the shorter side) with easy-to-understand language (all medical/legal terms are defined). Overall, I would rate My Sister’s Keeper an 8/10 for its emotional depth and incisive look at the complexities of familial love and sacrifice.
